Road toll stands at 44

There's been more tragedy on the nation's roads today, with a 69-year-old cyclist the
latest fatality for the holiday road toll.

A total of 44 people have died on Australian roads since the holiday toll period began,
on December 22.

New South Wales has recorded 25 fatal accidents -- almost 60 per cent of the total
fatalities for the period.

In Queensland, the toll is at seven after three fatal accidents yesterday.

And in Victoria, Melbourne's Islamic community will seek legal advice on what fault,
if any, led to the death of an Eritrean Muslim teenager in a bus accident yesterday.

That accident has taken Victoria's road toll to four.

Western Australia has recorded three deaths, South Australia three, the Australian
Capital Territory one, and Tasmania one.

There have been no fatal accidents in the Northern Territory since the toll began.

(Eds: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 December 22 to 2359 January
7. Some states and territories have different periods).
