QLD: Tenor Donald Smith dies, aged 78

BRISBANE, Dec 3 AAP - Donald Smith, the Bundaberg-born tenor whose ability took him to the
worlds opera houses, has died in Brisbane, aged 78.

His voice was the first to be heard in the Sydney Opera House after its opening in 1973.

Mr Smith, OBE, died on Tuesday at the Pleasantville Nursing Home after a long illness.

The former Queensland cane cutter began singing country and western music in Bundaberg, but
at 19 made his operatic debut in Brisbane in a production of Edward Germans Merrie England.

He sang regularly with the Australian Opera from 1966.

During World War II, Mr Smith serviced at Milne Bay in New Guinea.

He is survived by his widow Thelma and three children.

A funeral service was being held at 1pm today at the Freedom Family Church in Rochedale,
Brisbane.
